A Brief History of Hawaii

The islands were first settled by Polynesians over a thousand years ago. European contact began in 1778. This was mark by the arrival of British explorer Captain James Cook.

In the 19th century, Hawaii became a hub for whaling, sugar, and pineapple industries. The industries attracted immigrants from around the world. This economic change pushed Native Hawaiians out of their lands. It also harmed the environment, affecting the islands’ unique plants and animals.

In 1898, Hawaii was annexed by the United States, and it became the 50th state in 1959. Today, Hawaii is famous for its lively culture and breathtaking natural beauty. It is also a global leader in environmental conservation and sustainability.


Formation of the Hawaiian Island Chain

Most volcanic regions are found at the edges of tectonic plates. However, the Hawaiian Islands are located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This unique positioning is due to a geological phenomenon known as a hotspot. A hotspot is fueled by a mantle plume—a column of hot magma rising from deep within the Earth’s mantle. As this plume reaches the base of the Earth’s crust, it causes the crust to bulge and some of the rock to melt into magma. Other examples are the Iceland and Yellowstone hotspots.

This magma finds its way to the surface through cracks in the crust, emerging as lava. Over time, the accumulation of lava flows forms volcanic islands. Hawaiian volcanoes are characterized by their basaltic lava, which is more fluid. This results in the formation of gently sloping shield volcanoes.

The Pacific Plate’s northwestward movement drags the crust over the stationary hotspot. This drift creates a chain of islands over millions of years. The oldest islands, such as Niihau and Kauai, are about five million years old. Meanwhile the Big Island of Hawaii, began forming around 400,000 years ago. As the hotspot continues to move, new islands will eventually form. Kama‘ehuakanaloa, formerly known as Lō‘ihi, is expected to surface in about 200 thousand years.

The Hawaiian archipelago consists of 15 volcanoes that make up the 8 principal islands. These volcanoes are the youngest in a chain of over 129 volcanoes. The chain stretches 3,600 miles (5,800 kilometers) across the North Pacific Ocean, known as the Hawaiian–Emperor seamount chain.

  • Hualālai: Although less active than its counterparts, Hualālai remains a significant feature on the Big Island.

  • Non-active Volcanoes in Big Island:
    • Mauna Kea: Known as the world’s tallest mountain when measured from its base on the ocean floor. Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano that hosts world-renowned astronomical observatories. Its high altitude, dry environment, and clear skies make it an ideal location for observing the universe.
    • Kohala: Is the oldest volcano on the Big Island, Kohala has not erupted for over 60,000 years and has been labeled as extinct.

  • Kama‘ehuakanaloa: Formerly known as Lō‘ihi Seamount. This underwater volcano may eventually breach the sea level to become the newest Hawaiian island.
  • Haleakalā: It forms more than 75% of the island of Maui. Haleakalā is the oldest currently active volcano in Hawaii. The rest of Maui is made up by the now-extinct West Maui volcano. Visitors often flock to Haleakalā’s summit to witness its breathtaking sunrise. During sunrise the first light of day casts vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple across the expansive crater.

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

Established in 1916, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park encompasses 335,259 acres. It features two volcanoes: Kīlauea and Mauna Loa. The park offers a diverse range of environments, from lava fields to rainforests and tundra. Popular activities include hiking, wildlife viewing, and participating in voluntourism projects.

Attractions include the Halema‘uma‘u Crater, Devastation Trail, and Sulphur Banks. Additionally, visitors can explore the entrance to a fascinating lava tube. These natural tunnels are formed by flowing lava beneath the surface.

Kīlauea Eruptions – 2021 and 2024

One of the most active volcanoes on Earth. It has been in a state of continuous activity since 1983. The volcano experienced significant eruptions in September 2021 and December 2024. Both events captivated scientists and visitors with their spectacular lava flows. The 2021 eruption within the Halema‘uma‘u Crater produced a mesmerizing lava lake. The 2024 eruption continued to showcase Kīlauea’s dynamic nature.

Mauna Loa Eruption – 1984 and 2022

The largest subaerial volcano on Earth. It erupted in November 2022 after a period of dormancy. This eruption was significant due to the sheer volume of lava produced. That time the flows were contained within the summit area, minimizing damage. Before this, Mauna Loa last erupted in March 1984 and lasted three weeks. The eruption produced lava flows that came within a few miles of the city of Hilo.

Hualālai Eruption – 1801

While not recent, the last eruption of Hualālai in 1801 is historically significant. It produced extensive lava flows that reached the ocean, altering the coastline. Although Hualālai has remained relatively quiet since then, it is still considered active. Scientists continue to monitor it for signs of renewed activity.
